Witr Prayer:

Witr is a salat (Islamic prayer) performed after Isha, the night prayer, or before Fajr, the dawn prayer. The translation of the word "Witr" is “Choice Of A Circle.”

Witr prayers are an essential part of the Islamic faith. Unlike the five daily mandatory prayers, Witr prayer is voluntary but highly recommended and is usually recited at night. There are multiple ways to say a Witr prayer.

Witr Prayer Is Necessary or Not?

Witr prayer is encourages by Sunnah. While there isn't any punishment for missing this prayer in Islam. Some Mufti’s claim that the Witr prayer is "Wajib" or "Sunnat-E-Muqadda", however this is incorrect because, in Islam, the Witr prayer is a voluntary act of prayer.

Although Mufti’s explain the phrases "Wajib" and "Sunnat-E-Muqadda", they are not specifically used in Islam. They used those terms to explain the situation.

"Wajib" and "Sunnat-E-Muqadda" just indicates that it is required to pray, not that it is compulsory.

Narrated AbuAyyub al-Ansari:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The witr is a duty for every Muslim so if anyone wishes to observe it with five rak'ahs, he may do so; if anyone wishes to observe it with three, he may do so, and if anyone wishes to observe it with one, he may do so.

Difference Between Qunoot E Nazila and Qunoot E Witr:

Qunoot E Nazila:

Qunoot e Nazila is a type of supplication (Dua) that is performed during the Salat al-Fajr in Islamic tradition. It is a prayer that is offered in times of crisis or calamity, seeking Allah's help and mercy to alleviate the difficulties faced by the Muslim community.

The term "Nazila" refers to a calamity or disaster that affects the entire community, such as war, famine, natural disasters, or oppression. The Qunoot e Nazila is a special Dua that is recited in the second rakat of Salat al-Fajr, after the recitation of the Quranic verses.

Translation:

O Allah! We implore You for help and beg forgiveness of You and believe in You and rely on You and extol You and we are thankful to You and are not ungrateful to You and we alienate and forsake those who disobey You. O Allah! You alone do we worship and for You do we pray and prostrate and we betake to please You and present ourselves for the service in Your cause and we hope for Your mercy and fear Your chastisement. Undoubtedly, your torment is going to overtake infidels O Allah!

Qunoot E Witr:

Dua e Qunoot is a supplication (Dua) that is recited during the Witr prayer in Islamic tradition. It is a special prayer that is offered before the last rakat (unit of prayer) of the Witr prayer. Dua e Qunoot is also recited during some other prayers, such as the Fajr prayer in some Islamic schools of thought.

Al-Hasan bin Ali [may Allah be pleased with him] said: Allah's Messenger taught me some phrases to say during Al-Witr (Allahummahdini fiman hadait, wa a'fini fiman afait, wa tawallani fiman tawallait, wa barik Li fima atait, wa qini sharra ma qadait, fa Innaka taqdi wa la yuqda Alaik, wa innahu la yadhillu man walait, tabarakta Rabbana wa ta'alait.) 'O Allah guide me among those You have guided, pardon me among those You have pardoned, befriend me among those You have befriended, bless me in what You have granted, and save me from the evil that You decreed. Indeed, you decree, and none can pass decree, and none can pass decree upon You, indeed he is not humiliated whom You have befriended, blessed are You our Lord and Exalted.'

Conclusion:

Qunoot-e-Nazila is a supplication recited during times of calamity, such as natural disasters, epidemics, or wars. This Qunoot is recited in the second Rak'ah of Fajr prayer and is considered an obligatory act when a calamity befalls the Muslim Ummah.

On the other hand, Qunoot-e-Witr is recited in the final Rak'ah of the Witr prayer every night. It is a voluntary act and not obligatory. The Qunoot-e-Witr consists of reciting different supplications, including seeking forgiveness from Allah and asking for His mercy and blessings.

In conclusion, while both Qunoot-e-Nazila and Qunoot-e-Witr involve supplicating to Allah, the Qunoot E Nazila is recited during times of calamity and is considered an obligatory act, while the Qunoot E Witr is recited during the Witr prayer. Understanding the difference between the two can help Muslims fulfill their religious obligations and seek Allah's mercy and guidance in times of need.
